Protecting Your Back When Golfing

Golf is a great game- full of excitement and bringing joy to millions of people around the world. It is particularly popular amongst the retired and well off, but with this it is important to realize that there are health risks associated with the game if players do not take the appropriate precautions to avoid injury. It is easy to throw out your back or pull a muscle when you really get into the thick of things and get excited by your game. There are a number of chiropractic tips which you should keep in mind and follow in order to minimize the risk of injury so that you can continue to play the game that you love.

The American Chiropractic Association has advice for how to prevent injuries before they happen when golfing. The first recommendation is that golfers purchase equipment that fits- the clubs are specifically made in different sizes for a reason which includes safety of the player. This is particularly an issue with women who often try to use their husbands’ old clubs, but it really is not a good idea. For both sexes, they should also make sure that they stretch for an adequate period of time and in the right manner to reduce the risk of getting hurt. This is actually where men tend to have a shortcoming compared to the other sex because they are less flexible- a good stretching regimen can overcome that increased risk of injury.

For those who have comorbidities including arthritis, it may be a good idea to look for a specialized grip to allow for maximal comfort and reduced flare-ups of the underlying disease. This is particularly an issue with older patients. Another thing that helps with this can be taking golf lessons from a pro who can help improve form which will also reduce the risk of injury. Novice players are especially vulnerable towards the apex of their swing when their posture often loses form. Instructors can help correct that.

Along the lines of using the right gear, orthotics are available on the market which will help with support of the feet by providing support and improving the body’s balance holistically. Metal spikes should actually be avoided despite what some say because they increase stress on the back by limiting flexibility towards the bottom of the body. Furthermore, they tear up those beautiful greens!

After stretching, it is important that players also warm up with practice swings so that they can get their form right for the day and also give some activity to parts of the body that are used in their swing which may not have seen as much activity during the stretch exercises. Keeping you whole body flexible and involved is generally very important from a chiropractic standpoint.

Aside from the use of the right equipment and how to control one’s body, it is important to stay hydrated, especially when playing a full set of 18 holes. Make sure to drink lots of water and limit the alcohol if possible. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll be sure to keep playing for a long, long time!
